How to set up censorship-free P2P file sharing
by Dave Kimble at www.peakoil.org.au

When your unprotected computer is downloading a file
using a peer-to-peer (P2P) application like BitTorrent,
it is also offering its BitTorrent files to others (seeding).
So others have got to know what your IP Address is
so that they can send requests to you.

If someone thinks you are using this P2P system to infringe their copyright,
they will download 'their files' regularly and harvest all the IP Addresses
of computers that sent bits of the file to them.
They can then try and sue them (you) or get your ISP to cut you off.

By using the Your-Freedom client as a proxy,
the traffic goes all via Singapore (or wherever),
and that only exposes their IP Address to the peers, not yours,
and although your ISP handles all the traffic,
it doesn't know what it is, because it is encrypted.

The Your-Freedom Client sits between your application and the internet connection,
encrypting the data being sent and unencrypting the data arriving.
It also handles all the security protocols.

When the application is a web browser, like Internet Explorer or Firefox,
the client is acting as an HTTP Proxy.
But other applications, like BitTorrent file-sharing applications,
use a different protocol called Socks-5.
The Y-F client acts as a Socks-5 proxy too.

Just like with the web browser, you have to point the application's connection to the Socks5 Proxy :
uTorrent > Preferences > Connection > Proxy Server:Type=Socks5 , Proxy=127.0.0.1 , Port=1080

It is actually a bit more complicated that - but there is a complete script on
how to set it up at https://www.your-freedom.net/index.php?id=128
Just follow the instructions.

Since BitTorrent files are often large,
you will probably want to pay for a proper Y-F service,
that gives you good bandwidth.
Prices are around AU$48 per year for a 256 Kbps service -
