Are hurricanes becoming more frequent due to global warming ?

This is the number of hurricanes, (typhoons and tropical cyclones) hitting the US Atlantic coast in the period 1944 to 1974.

The average is 10 per year and the trend is flat.

Hurricane frequency : 1944 to 1974

This is the number of hurricanes in the period 1974 to 2003.
The average is 10.5 per year and the trend is increasing by 0.17 per year.

Hurricane frequency : 1974 -2003

Given that these are data sets with 30 data points in each, the change in trend would seem to be significant.
